British Gas announces a 12.5% rise in electricity prices this Autumn – what can you do?

British Gas, owned by Centrica, supplies electricity and gas to half a million businesses UK-wide and is a market leader in domestic supply. Yesterday (1st August 2017), the supplier announced its electricity prices are due to rise by 12.5%.

British Gas was the only one of the Big 6 energy firms not to raise prices earlier this year, but standard tariff increases are now expected from September. Experts are warning that this could kick off a new round of price rises this winter from rival suppliers, meaning some businesses will feel the impact twice in rapid succession.

This is the supplier’s first rise since 2013 after saying it has held off from the price increase for as long as possible. A spokesperson from Centrica had said the upsurge is a result of rising policy costs including subsidies for renewables, social levies, and the smart meter rollout.

However, the government have responded and said its policy costs don’t explain the price escalation. Current inflation is just 2.6 per cent and wholesale energy prices are falling.

For new business electricity customers, British Gas is offering a price match service where, if you find a better one year quote within 5 days of signing up as a British Gas customer, they will match it.
