An effective energy management programme for A.F. Blakemore

An effective energy management programme for A.F. Blakemore

A.F. Blakemore is one of the UK’s largest family-owned food and drink businesses, with 263 SPAR stores across England and Wales.

In common with most of the high street retail sector, they are facing growing pressure to both control costs and respond to increased consumer awareness of the requirement for responsible businesses to reduce carbon emissions.

Inenco’s approach to sustainability and energy efficiency is guided by proven methodologies and is tailored to customer’s needs, strategic objectives and position on the net zero journey. An approach built on over 50 years of experience and data-driven advice.

Delivering Better Business

The collaborative efforts of this partnership have resulted in the development of a robust energy management programme with Inenco supporting A.F. Blakemore to achieve year-on-year continued improvements in energy consumption.

To date, the carbon reduction and energy savings stand at over 7% primarily down to operational efficiencies including driving behavioural, policy and process changes, and the start of some strategic data-driven investment opportunities.

Delivering Better Business

This activity involved the Solutions and Sustainability Team at Inenco working closely with A.F. Blakemore to:

  • Continuously monitor and measure energy consumption
  • Undertake regular detailed consumption data analysis to identify trends
  • Upskill and equip internal teams with valuable energy management insights and knowledge
  • Produce, review and update technical guidance
  • Deliver energy efficiency training and produce induction programme content
  • Introduce doors to refrigerated display cabinets to better conserve energy
  • Develop new store standard specification and energy management policies
  • Implement new shutdown procedures with alert triggers
  • Identify strategic capital equipment replacement with the use of data insights
  • Improve planned, preventative maintenance
  • Remain compliant with annual carbon reporting

The next phase of work in this partnership, in line with the energy management programme, focuses on capital expenditure activity.

This activity will offer further significant reductions in carbon supported by data and insight from the Inenco team. This aids informed strategic decision-making by helping to identify replacements for older or failed equipment, including the best technology available on the market, whilst considering CapEx, unit and operational cost.
